Clear, practical guides for writing, compiling, and sharing LaTeX projects.
Use the editor
Open files, arrange panes, search the whole project, and reach every command.
Open and organize files
The Explorer holds the project tree, and Quick Open jumps straight to a path without browsing for it.
How to do it
- Open Quick Open and type any part of a path; matching is fuzzy, so "intro" finds sections/introduction.tex.
- Use New File, New Folder and Upload at the top of the Explorer, or drop files from your desktop straight onto the tree.
- Drag a file onto a folder to move it; its context menu also offers Open, Copy Path, Rename, Download and Delete.
- Click a file to open it; typing stays in the Explorer, so you can press Enter on Mac or F2 on Windows to rename it. Arrow keys move the selection; Delete removes it.
- Images, PDFs, diagrams (.drawio), notebooks (.ipynb) and Office documents open in a preview pane instead of a text editor.
⌃P opens Quick Open.
Split the workspace into panes
Every tab can be moved into its own pane, so the source, a second file and the PDF stay visible together.
How to do it
- Right-click a tab, or use the command palette, to split the editor left, right, up or down.
- Drag a tab onto another pane to move it there, or onto a pane's edge to create a new split.
- Pin important tabs from their menu; pinned tabs stay on a separate top row and are protected from shortcuts and bulk close commands.
- Expand the focused pane to work on one file for a moment without closing the others.
- Close Others, Close to the Right and Close All are on the same tab menu.
⌃⇧W closes the active tab; ⌃W works only in the installed app, because browsers reserve it.
Search and replace across the project
The Search view scans every text file in the project, not just the open ones.
How to do it
- Open Search from the activity bar or its shortcut, then type your query.
- Toggle Match Case or Use Regular Expression, and open the details row to add include and exclude globs such as *.tex or opencode/**.
- Show Replace to edit the matches in place; Replace All is disabled while results are incomplete, so narrow the filters first.
- Generated and binary files (.pdf, .svg, .aux, .ipynb, lock files) are skipped unless an include pattern names them.
⌃⇧F opens the Search view; ⌃F searches only the file you are editing.
Run commands and adjust the editor
The command palette lists the project's actions alongside every action the code editor itself provides.
How to do it
- Open the palette and start typing — compile, sync to PDF, insert a citation, open settings, split panes and formatting commands are all there.
- Toggle the sidebar or the bottom panel when you need more room for the source.
- Turn word wrap, the minimap and spell check on or off from the palette; the choices are remembered for you.
- Open Project settings from the palette for compile, root document and project-wide options.
⌃⇧P or F1 opens the palette; ⌃B toggles the sidebar; {ctrl+`} toggles the bottom panel.
